Quiet and idyllic yet at the centre of it all. Is Castrop-Rauxel in Germany a real place? Or is it just a funny name? There’s just one answer: You bet it exists! This former mining city in north-western Germany’s Ruhr area is slowly emerging as a champion of fine cuisine, so let’s have a look starting right at our own doorstep!
Restaurant Goldschmieding with rose garden terrace
At Restaurant Goldschmieding, a historic manor house dating to the 12th century, the day starts with an extensive breakfast – served on the terrace during the summer months. Our tip: ask for Gudrun, she’s been with Goldschmieding for years and always has an interesting story to tell. On warm days, restaurant manager Tobias and chef de cuisine Jan look forward to treating guests to a delicious barbecue outdoors. All this makes Goldschmieding THE green oasis in the middle of the Ruhr region. In the evening, restaurant patrons will enjoy local specialities with international influences, served in a casual atmosphere in front of North Rhine-Westphalia’s oldest sandstone fireplace from the year 1597.
Every first Friday of the month, when the civil registry office moves into the manor house, you can even tie the knot here for life.
But let’s go for a stroll along the beautiful tree-lined avenue and see what else Castrop-Rauxel has to offer.
French flair at Restaurant 1910
“Vive la France” comes to mind when you stand in front of 1910. The recently opened brasserie serves specialty coffees, fresh pastries and a unique menu. The historic two-storey building – dating to the year 1910 – offers enjoyable views of Castrop’s lively market square.
Chianti and amore at Ristorante Martins
Leaving France behind us, we travel on to Italy. Set off a bit from the main street, in a little timber-frame house, we are greeted by Pina and her team at Ristorante Martins. Here you’ll find the finest Italian cuisine in town – and if it’s not on the large menu, they’ll whip it up for you on the spot. During the summer, the terrace offers a secluded place in which to enjoy your stay late into the night with a good glass of Chianti.
Outdoor pool à la carte
A newcomer, but already well-established on the scene, is the former open-air pool Parkbad Süd in the city park. The à-la-carte restaurant serves Mediterranean delicacies in a beach atmosphere. Chef de cuisine Rainer has cooked for the German Football Association and knows how to anticipate his guests’ every wish.
‘Altherrengedeck’ at Kulisse
For a nightcap, we head to the living room atmosphere of Kulisse in the old town centre. The down-to-earth pub atmosphere is perfect for ending the day on a relaxed note. Our recommendation: a shot and a beer – the so called ‘Altherrengedeck’.
Castrop-Rauxel clearly has a few things to offer… so come and see for yourself!
