Finally eating healthy, maintaining your weight, or better still… These wishes are at the top of just about every list of resolutions for the new year. Are you looking to start the new year off healthy and have you resolved to do whatever it takes to reach this goal? Well, sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose. In beautiful Neckarsulm, for example. Only recently, the little city near Stuttgart hosted the first Women’s Health Deutschland fitness weekend – with lots of sports and plenty of tips on how to eat right. The hotel knows how it goes! 😉
It seems that everyone has already succumbed to the exotic superfood craze. The prevailing food trends dictate that chia seeds and goji berries be part of our daily diet. These so-called superfoods have often travelled a long way from far-off places before they land on our supermarket shelves. But there’s no need for long-distance travel and expensive imports! One look in your own garden should be enough to discover a wealth of regional superfoods! 😊

Sure, many of these exotic fruits, seeds and powders contain health-boosting ingredients – but our local superfoods are just as good, if not better! Some important sources of essential nutrients include a whole range of familiar herbs, nuts, green salads, berries and seeds from our own garden.
Superfoods as salad topping: How about stinging nettle seeds or flax seeds? These seeds contain large amounts of proteins and Omega 3 fatty acids that are essential for the human body. Tomatoes have at least the same amount of antioxidants as chia seeds. Antioxidants protect cells against free radicals and prevent the cells from being attacked and destroyed.
Worth sinning for since time immemorial: the apple: What would humankind have missed out on if Adam and Eve hadn’t brought this lovely round fruit with them from the Garden of Eden? To this day, apples have lost none of their attraction. Apples may not contain very high amounts of vitamins, but they are loaded with a very beneficial source of dietary fibre called pectin. Pectin helps relieve the symptoms of gastritis and of the stomach flu. It stimulates the growth of our intestinal flora and so strengthens our immune system. And it has been shown to reduce levels of LDL-cholesterol. Apples also contain highly effective antioxidant polyphenols capable, among other things, of lowering the risk of colon cancer. Raw, unpeeled apples are the best, by the way, as polyphenols are found mainly in the skin and tend to degrade when exposed to heat.
No matter what your resolutions for the new year…
