“How do you like your eggs for breakfast?” In a relationship, this question may even be as important as the one about how the other person drinks their coffee. And just as difficult to answer. Everyone likes their eggs differently, which turns the art of cooking them into a science. Soft white and soft yolk? Soft white and firm yolk? Firm white and soft yolk? Both firm? With so many combinations and so many possible recipes, this little oval delicacy is one of the most versatile foods around.
Okay. So how DO you cook the perfect egg?
Rule of thumb
For boiled eggs, the important thing to think about is the cooking time. This simple table is intended as an approximate guideline.
Firmness |
Cooking time |
Soft-boiled eggs |
3–5 minutes |
Creamy hard-boiled eggs |
5–8 minutes |
Very firm hard-boiled eggs |
9 minutes or more |
Of course, there are other ways to cook an egg than boiling it. See below.
Egg dishes
Fried
Frying an egg isn’t difficult. All you have to do is heat a little oil in a pan at medium heat. Then you crack the egg into the pan and fry it for 2 to 3 minutes with a bit of salt and pepper. The perfect fried egg is ready when the white is completely cooked but not rubbery, the edges are crispy and the bright yellow yolk begins to thicken but is not hard.
Scrambled
To make scrambled eggs, you’ll also need a pan with a bit of oil or butter heated at medium heat. Now crack the eggs into the pan (the number of eggs determines the size of the dish | 1–2 eggs per person) and stir for about 2 minutes with a wooden spoon.
Poached
There are many tips and trick for poaching eggs. But making a poached egg is really quite simple. All you have to do is add a teaspoon of vinegar to simmering water, crack the egg directly into the pot and cook for about 2 minutes. Remove the egg from the water and add salt and pepper to taste.
