LEISURE ACTIVITIES

EXPERIENCE MUNICH

Despite being a world city, host of the world's largest folk culture festival and the capital of the state of Bavaria, Munich has retained its intimacy and charm. The hectic pace of big city life is entirely absent here. Because the true 'Munchener' is at his or her happiest quaffing beer in one of the city's numerous beer gardens.

  • ENJOY MUNICH

The Viktualienmarkt is a permanent food market. The stalls are arranged around a beer garden that is also home to the city's maypole. Locals and tourists alike gather here every year for a communal feast. A splendid view awaits anyone climbing the 306 steps of the neighbouring Alter Peter church. On a good day, you can see for up to 100 kilometres.

  • THE MUNICH GLOCKENSPIEL

Twice a day, visitors from all over the world gather on Marienplatz to watch and listen as the glockenspiel in the Neues Rathaus re-enacts the history of the city. The square is also the location for many of Munich's public festivities, from the Christmas market and Stadtfest city festival to FC Bayern Munich's football championship celebrations.

  • MUNICH ARTS SCENE

Munich is home to a wide range of museums. Vistit the Pinakothek museums and the Lenbachhaus in Maxvorstadt – an area particularly popular with students thanks to its numerous bars and cafés. Museum Island houses the 30,000 exhibits of the Deutsches Museum. Just a stone's throw away is the Muffathalle concert hall.

  • MUNICH FOOD & DRINK

Whatever the time of year, Muncheners like to sit outside, as long as the sun is shining. And after a stroll in the English Garden, or watching the windsurfers on the Eisbach, or perhaps just to meet up with friends, the nearest beer garden is never far away. Where better to sample classic Bavarian dishes such as Weisswurst sausages, Obatzda cheese or Schweinsbraten roast pork?

  • MUNICH OUT & ABOUT

Go for a run along the re-naturalised Isar river. Rent a bike and explore the city. Swim a few lengths in the Müller‘sches Volksbad. Or head out of the city on the S-bahn to Starnberger See or Andechs Monastery.
