Five ways to celebrate Karl Marx’s 200th birthday in Trier

The 5th May 2018 marked 200 years since the birth of socialist hero, Karl Marx

As well as experiencing Germany’s oldest city - the UNESCO World Heritage sight, Trier - visitors of Trier will have the chance to try an array of quirky Karl Marx themed activities throughout May - and also the whole year!

Buy a €0 note… for €3

For those looking for some Marxist memorabilia to remember their trip to Trier, the ancient German city has designed a quirky €0 note, perfect to take home. The Marx themed note, designed especially for the occasion to play on Marx’s criticisms of capitalist culture will, however, set you back €3.

Cross the road with Karl Marx

Waiting for the little green man in Trier could take longer than you expect this summer. Trier’s personalised Karl Marx themed traffic lights have replaced the little green and red man in the city, promising to help guide you safely through the city during your stay.

Step back in time through Marx’s life

Discover the life, culture and personality of Karl Marx himself with trier’s exclusive Karl Marx exhibition running throughout the city. ‘Karl Marx 1818-1883, Life, Works, Time’ will be presented at two venues in central Trier remembering Marx as a philosopher, cultural icon and family man. Exhibition launches 5th May.

Marvel Marx up close with controversial new statue

Attend the unveiling of Trier’s recently erected Marx statue outside his former home in the city. Given to Trier by China, the statue has received criticism by Marxist enthusiasts, labelled even by some as a poisonous gift. Trier’s council voted to accept the gift in early 2017 and are inviting visitors to come and see it for themselves on the 200th anniversary.

Unveiling of statue will take place 5th May 2018
