This autumn, for the 11th time, Łódź was transformed into the Polish capital of design. From 3rd through 8th October, visitors had the chance to admire numerous exhibitions, listen to lectures and participate in discussion panels during the Łódź Design Festival. The theme was OD.NOWA (A.NEW) and the aim was to prompt us to think about re-creating and redesigning.

The Łódź Design Festival is the biggest festival of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, with graphic design, industrial design and fashion. The festival consisted of two main exhibitions:
New Old – Designing for Our Future Selves
(organiser: London Design Museum; curators: Helen Hamlyn and Jeremy Myerson; authors of presented projects: Yves Béhar/fuseproject, Konstantin Grcic, Future Facility, Special Projects, IDEO and Priestman Goode)
The exhibition focused on new solutions which an aging society will rely on. A traditional image of aging, for which illness and dependence on others are characteristic, was replaced by thinking about old age as a socially and culturally active time. The exhibition showed how design can change our lives in the future.

Urban Daydreaming
(organiser: Vitra Design Museum; curators: Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec)
The exhibition featured a collection of forms that can be implemented in urban space. It showed how nature and the city interact, and it made suggestions as to spatial development so the city would look more beautiful.

Other exhibitions were also open during the Łódź Design Festival: Polish Design Island 2017, The Best of Hungary, Mystery Things Museum, AccessAbility.
As is the case every year, young designers and manufacturers were invited to compete in the “make me!” contest. By presenting their work, participants had a chance to become a part of the design environment and to promote their creative endeavours. The main prize went to Benno Brucksch from Germany for his project “Crayons out of soil”.
