Take a walk and discover

The historic 'City of the Lion' combines a lively town centre with green open spaces. First mentioned in 1031, Lower Saxony's second largest city is renowned for its diverse cultural life, great shopping and a lively restaurant scene.

  • Hit the lights in Braunschweig

Braunschweig is turning on the lights from 11 June to 22 September 2016. In various public places, Lichtparcours Braunschweig will show light installations by international artists including big names from the contemporary art scene like Tobias Rehberger and Alfredo Jaar. For a special experience, check out the works from the river Oker by raft, barge or canoe - a new way of looking at art.

  • BRAUNSCHWEIG TOP 5

First time in Braunschweig? Don't miss the historically significant Burgplatz lined by the cathedral, Dankwarderode Castle, the Landesmuseum and pretty half-timbered buildings.

  • THE BEST VIEWS OF BRAUNSCHWEIG

Get a bird's eye view of the city. Climb the 153 steps to the Quadriga on top of the Residenzschloss. Or the 161 steps up the Rathaus tower. Or the 389 steps of the Südturm von St. Andreas. Braunschweig at night: take a tour of the Magniviertel quarter. Braunschweig by boat: A trip on the river Oker is a great way to see the city.

  • BRAUNSCHWEIG'S FAVOURITE QUARTER

With its shops, cafés and narrow streets of pretty half-timbered houses, the Magniviertel quarter is a popular haunt for visitors and residents alike. Tip: don't miss the Altstadt festival in late summer. The Michaelisviertel and the Aegidienviertel quarters are also worth a visit.

  • GOING OUT IN BRAUNSCHWEIG

Night owls can look forward to a buzzing nightlife scene of restaurants, bars and clubs. In the streets around the university (known as the Friedrich Wilhelm quarter or the Kultviertel) and in the Magniviertel, revellers are often out well into the small hours.

  • BRAUNSCHWEIG EXCURSIONS

If you have a little more time on your hands, why not take a day trip or half-day trip out of the city? Take your pick from the Autostadt museum complex in Wolfsburg, Harz national park, Schloss Wolfenbüttel, Hornburg half-timbered village, or the Allerpark activity centre.
