Lodz: attractions
What to see & what do in free time in Lodz
Lodz is a city that combines the old with the new in a unique way. In its rich industrial history, it has recognised its development potential – the last decades have been marked by total revitalisation. Beautiful Art Nouveau and modernist townhouses and modernised industrial facilities have become the city's landmarks. But it is not only the architecture which is worth admiring during a walk: Lodz is teeming with art, both in galleries and in the street space. The walls of houses are covered with murals, while courtyards and arcades hide installations and artistic projects (read about the most famous ones on the Vienna House Stories blog). Check out what else you can do in Lodz and what interesting places are hidden among local woonerfs.
WHAT TO SEE IN LODZ
A must-see is a stroll along Piotrkowska Street, one of the longest shopping streets in Europe, which in a way functions as the Old Town of Lodz. The locals asked about ‘Lodz attractions’, also mention the Lodz Fabryczna station, the Museum of Art with its branch in Ogrodowa Street, the historical urban complex of Księży Młyn and the Unicorn Stable (Stajnia Jednorożców), a fairytale-looking shelter at the Piotrkowska Centrum tram stop. The Stable's inhabitant is nearby – Tomohiro Inaba’s unicorn sculpture, which looks as if it is melting in the air... Click for more inspiration.
EC1 LODZ – CITY OF CULTURE
Another ‘must’ in Lodz is EC1 – a cultural institution located in the revitalized buildings of the former Lodz Power Plant, allowing you to spend your free time wisely and inspiringly. In the Lodz Science Center, it is worth visiting the spectacular planetarium with a spherical cinema, walking one of the educational paths of the Science and Technology Center – the one about energy processing is impressive, you can see old installations and devices – or at the Comics Center you can follow the entire creative and publishing cycle of a graphic novel and go out with your own creation in hand.
MANUFAKTURA LODZ
One of the advantages of Vienna House Andel's Lodz is its location in the vicinity of Manufaktura in Lodz, a shopping and entertainment center established on the site of a former factory complex – the hotel building was also part of it. Manufaktura offers not only a huge selection of shops (also with unique handicrafts) and dining options, but also a cultural zone with museums and numerous entertainment: there is a climbing wall (over 50 routes!), bowling alley, laser room, pool and slot machines. In summer, part of the Manufaktura’s main square is occupied by a sandy beach and in winter – an ice rink. It is the perfect destination for a group outing, just 5 minutes from the hotel.
LODZ LEISURE ACTIVITIES – AT THE HOTEL
You don't have to leave Vienna House Andel's Lodz to have fun – the hotel itself is an attraction, and it's so big that you'd sooner get lost in it than feel bored. Especially if you take part in the hotel's city game: challenge stations, riddle rooms, and learning about the history of the Poznański's factory and the entire city – this is the patent for 'Lodz in a day'. Culinary craft workshop in Delight restaurant will also be an interesting group activity option – cooking together with the mentoring support of chef Mirek Jabłoński will integrate every team!
RACING TRACK LODZ
For those who, nonetheless, want to go outside – and feel the adrenaline rush through their veins – a trip to the racing track in Kielmina, near Lodz, would be a perfect choice. It is a dream come true for every keen driver – bold, challenging and fast driving, without any speed limitations, but in complete safety. The track organises events for companies, and the drive from the hotel takes less than half an hour. Are you already putting your foot down?
