Sandberg - sand and sea in Bratislava

Looking for a magnificant view to the surroundings of Bratislava? Visit Sandberg, the sandstone hill located in Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve close to the city. From a paleontological point of view it is a very rare and extremely important locality. The most important findings include shark teeth, gastropods, sea urchins, bivalve molluscs, seal bones, and bones of whales of Tertiary era. Trippers will feel like on a real sandy beach when being here during the summer. Only the sea is missing, but the place is in a beautiful and unique natural setting. There is also a short educational trail leading to the Sandberg Hill starting in Devínska Nová Ves, which will enrich you with interesting knowledge.

Ganymede's fountain

In the center of the city, right on Hviezdoslav Square, there is the Neo-Baroque Ganymede fountain. It embellishes the entrance to the historic Slovak National Theater. This work of art was made by the Slovak sculptor Viktor Tilgner, who was inspired by the Italian park of Villa d'Este in Tivoli. Did you know? The fountain portraits an antique Greek myth about a boy called Ganymede, who was kidnapped by Zeus and transphormed into an eagle!

Majestic Bratislava

Bratislava's city landmark, the castle, is perched 85 m high above the Danube. Once the seat of the Great Moravian Empire, today it is used by parliament on official occasions, and is home to the Slovak National Museum. From the castle you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and its environs. The Reduta Concert Hall is in the immediate vicinity.

Bratislava Old Town

Marvel at the myriad of historic buildings as you wander through the old town and perhaps linger a while in one of the many bars and cafés. The Old Town Hall in the main square, which originally comprised three different buildings, is particularly attractive. The only remaining gate of the medieval fortification is Michael's Gate, which is well worth the climb.
