Explore Leipzig

Leipzig combines the best from the past and the hippest from today. From nostalgic coffeehouse culture to cool bars, cultural highlights or a classical concert, Leipzig has something for every taste. And speaking of taste, visitors to the city have got to try the famous "Leipziger Allerlei", a delicious plate of young peas, carrots, asparagus and morels – ideally served with freshwater lobster.

THE EXACT LOCATION

Thinking of exploring Leipzig on foot, heading out into nature by bike or taking the next train into the surrounding area? With or without a car, the city and the region are easy to explore. Just step in front of the door and off you go.

  • Panometer - a unusual museum

Since 2003 the Panometer Leipzig presents the largest 360° panoramas of the world. The circular images of Yadegar Asisi with a height of 32 meters impress together with a thematic accompanying exhibition and making-of film.

  • Fockeberg - A spectacular view of Leipzig's panorama

Lush green grass, lots of bushes and trees and a great view from the top. At first sight the Fockeberg seems to be a normal mountain. Would you have thought that the elevation was artificially created? And from rubble! The real name of the Fockeberg is "rubble dump - farmers' meadows“. The mountain got its current name only later from the adjacent Fockestraße.

  • Café Katzentempel

A purr and a meow... At the Leipzig Cat Café, you can watch your beloved four-legged friends playing and fooling around. There are only four cafés in Germany with this great concept. Time to feast is from morning to night. Whether it’s a delicious breakfast with your loved one or a coffee chat with your best friend - everything served is homemade and vegetarian or vegan.

  • Night Flea Market

Attention night owls! Precious, rare, nostalgic, iconic, cheesy, playful... At one of the most beautiful flea markets in Germany, there is a lot to browse and discover. Here you will find treasured loot, decorative trifles, bibelots (as the French call them), but also of course the real treasures. The Leipzig Nachflohmarkt is an absolute must for every collector & flea market enthusiast.

  • Leipzig Public Pool

Also suitable for non-swimmers: the Leipzig Stadtbad is a historic gem. The prestigious entrance hall, the former men’s swimming pool and the women’s sauna in Moorish style invite you to marvel. Go on a journey of discovery. The historic premises can also be rented for events, exhibitions and conferences. It is again a jovial and cheerful place where thousands of Leipzigers once learned to swim.

  • The cult of coffee

Did you know that Leipzig is famous for its coffeehouses? The café & restaurant Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum in the middle of the old town is one of the oldest coffeehouses in Europe and comes with a historical as well as creaking floor and chairs on several storeys. The Kaffeehaus Riquet with its unique Art Nouveau facade is an eye-catcher in more than one ways. At the Café Kandler and Café Corso, tattling coffee addicts also get their money's worth. And what goes with coffee? Leipziger Lerchen – delicious shortcrust pastry pies filled with almond paste and jam, and definitely not with any birds after which the pastry is named.

  • For pedestrians only

Lose yourself in the more than 20 shopping arcades and open courtyards of the Leipzig city centre. This labyrinth is reserved for pedestrians. Once in a while, take your eyes off the nifty shops, hidden restaurants and bars, and look above: some of the arcades and courtyards are a real architectural marvel.

  • Lifestyle in Leipzig

Apart from the bars and restaurants around the Barfußgässchen alley and the cultural centre Moritzbastei in the inner city, the Connewitz district is the place to be for night owls. At the weekend, fans of techno music from all over the world flock to the Distillery Club, while drum lessons, theatres, discos and international concerts are held on the premises of the Werk II. The Karl-Liebrecht-Strasse street ("Karli" for short) in the Südvorstadt district is the pub strip in the middle of the student quarter and perfect for bar hoppers. Search and find extravagant souvenirs at the night flea market in the Kohlrabizirkus hall.

  • Leipzig classics

Thanks to more than a thousand years of history, Leizpig has a lot of offer. Take, for example, the Old Town Hall and the Market Place (Altes Rathaus, Markt), where the farmers' market is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Christmas market takes place during Advent season. The Nikolaikirche church was the starting point of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution in East Germany. The Old Stock Exchange (Alte Handelsbörse) at the Naschmarkt is a sight to behold, Auerbachs Keller is a historical restaurant known from Goethe's Faust, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is an impressively large structure, the Asisi Panometer exhibits the world's biggest panorama pictures and the Gewandhaus is home to one of the country's most accomplished orchestras.
