Explore Wetzlar
Lotte, Leica, Leitz

The city of Wetzlar in Middle Hesse looks back on a long history and has been characterised by culture, trade and industry. The Leica camera set out on its way to world renown from Wetzlar. Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s stay at Wetzlar inspired him to write his novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. And the lively town has still lost nothing of its appeal.

Where do you want to go?

Just take a walk to explore the idyllic historic city-centre with its many half-timbered houses and baroque buildings along the river Lahn and the prominent unfinished dome. Leitz Park is one of the town’s current attractions that tourists like to explore, some of them looking through their cameras. As the hotel is situated right in the middle of Leitz Park, you definitely won’t be able to miss it.

  • Experience optics

Discover optical phenomena on an experimental walk - at the optics course in Wetzlar. Continue at the Viseum, the house of optics and precision engineering. No simple museum, but the latest high-tech technology for an exciting experience.

It gets exciting in the "dark department store". Blind guides lead you through the darkness. If one of our senses fails, the others sharpen up. Feel, smell, taste - see nothing and yet experience a lot.

  • Get out of the comfort zone

  • Leica love

Wetzlar’s Leitz Park focuses on the Leica camera that is at the centre of the architecture, offers and exhibitions there. Photography lovers absolutely have to take a look at the changing top-notch exhibitions. Professional photographers hold highly interesting photography classes there that will allow you to improve your own photography skills which you may then test immediately when taking a walk on the Leica nature trail.

  • The unfinished dome

You absolutely have to see this – the dome sitting right at the centre of Wetzlar’s pittoresque old city-centre. You don’t have to be an architect to see that it is still unfinished – and it has remained so for centuries. Use the Dome App to search for historical traces and discover fingerprints from more than 1,100 years of building history.

  • Goethe was here, …

…and he even stayed at Wetzlar for some time. Today we can follow the footsteps of the most important representative of German classical literature. Just use the interactive hiking map and embark on a 2.5 hour hike on Wetzlar’s Goetheweg – and don’t forget to visit Lottehaus.

  • Top after-work photo subject

When you wanted to go from Frankfurt to Cologne in the 14th century, you had to cross the Alte Lahnbrücke – and you can still do that today. You should definitely not miss out on this subject – whether you want to post it on Instagram or take analog photos. Take a walk through Colchester Anlage and take a break at the Weingarten, relaxing in one of the deck chairs. Or watch canoeists on the Lahn river trying to master the slide while enjoying a cool beer in the beer garden.
