Music fills the air

Directly in front of the Vienna Townhouse Bach Leipzig, there he stands quite sublime, with the world-famous St. Thomas Church in the back: Johann Sebastian Bach – to this day one of the most influential and well-known composers and musicians of all times. Every Friday and Saturday you can listen to the St. Thomas Boys Choir singing motets. Particularly impressive are the seasonal performances of the great oratorios together with one of Germany’s most accomplished orchestras the Gewandhaus Orchester. 

Leipzig classics

Thanks to more than a thousand years of history, Leizpig has a lot of offer. Take, for example, the Old Town Hall and the Market Place (Altes Rathaus, Markt), where the farmers' market is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Christmas market takes place during Advent season. The Nikolaikirche church was the starting point of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution in East Germany. The Old Stock Exchange (Alte Handelsbörse) at the Naschmarkt is a sight to behold, Auerbachs Keller is a historical restaurant known from Goethe's Faust, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is an impressively large structure and the Asisi Panometer exhibits the world's biggest panorama pictures. 

The cult of coffee

Did you know that Leipzig is famous for its coffeehouses? The café & restaurant Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum in the middle of the old town is one of the oldest coffeehouses in Europe and comes with a historical as well as creaking floor and chairs on several storeys. The Kaffeehaus Riquet with its unique Art Nouveau facade is an eye-catcher in more than one way. At the Café Kandler and Café Corso, tattling coffee addicts also get their money's worth. And what goes with coffee? Leipziger Lerchen – delicious shortcrust pastry pies filled with almond paste and jam, and definitely not with any birds after which the pastry is named.

For pedestrians only

Lose yourself in the more than 20 shopping arcades and open courtyards of the Leipzig city centre. This labyrinth is reserved for pedestrians. Once in a while, take your eyes off the nifty shops, hidden restaurants and bars, and look above: some of the arcades and courtyards are a real architectural marvel.

Lifestyle in Leipzig

Apart from the bars and restaurants around the Barfußgässchen alley and the cultural centre Moritzbastei in the inner city, the Connewitz district is the place to be for night owls. At the weekend, fans of techno music from all over the world flock to the Distillery Club, while drum lessons, theatres, discos and international concerts are held on the premises of the Werk II. The Karl-Leibrechtstrasse street ("Karli" for short) in the Südvorstadt district is the pub strip in the middle of the student quarter and perfect for bar hoppers. Search and find extravagant souvenirs at the Nachtflohmarkt flea market in the Kohlrabizirkus hall.
